I just started doing my masters for a few weeks. I thought i have spent enough time last year to prepare in advance for my thesis. Unfortunately, that was not enough. The literature review i did was not from journals of high credibility.
I had to re-start my literature review again. Sigh...
I consulted my father, who is a phd holder. He said every experience is an example or a lesson if you take it positively. If my efforts paid off, it would be a good example. If not, then my 'wasted effort' was a good lesson for me of the importance of finding quality journals. Ultimately, don't let get it in the way of your progress.
I took that advice, picked myself up, and re-did the work. I found out the 2nd time going through it, it was smoother, because I knew what I was looking for, built on the foundation on the research I did last year. I had more clarity in figuring out what I wanted for my thesis because I knew what I DID NOT want from my research last year.
Making mistakes & knowing what you don't want is part of the learning process. And I believe it applies to life too...

Research is definitely trial and error. For me, I don't have many people to consult on academia matters, so you're pretty lucky to have someone close to open up about this.
